This is gonna be a big one! For those who don’t know, 2x a year (once in November, once in April) Sephora holds a 20% off sale for VIB and VIB Rouge members (15% off for Beauty Insider) across the whole entire store, no exceptions. I assume everyone went a little crazy like me so I’d like to share what I purchased with animated swatches (so cool right?), and give some mini reviews.
Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation
I got a sample of this when it first came out and loved it! This is truly a very matte foundation so I wouldn’t recommend it for dry skin types. I’m also impressed by how long-wearing it really is. It still looks good on my skin after 10+ hours of wear without emphasizing dry patches. This foundation looks flawless on the skin and I would say it has medium/buildable coverage. I highly recommend this to anyone with oily or normal skin, but you must blend it quickly as it dries pretty fast.
Smashbox Studio Skin 15 Hour Hydrating Foundation
Since the winter dries out my skin, wearing a drying foundation didn’t really make much sense, so I was looking for a hydrating one that gives good coverage. I bought this because it’s free of: fragrance, SLS, talc, parabens and phthalates which is amazing for my sensitive skin. Jenn Im aka clothesencounters on YouTube also loves this so I remembered that while walking by the display. I freaking love this foundation. This will probably be my all-time favourite from now on because it’s so perfect! It dries down very matte (surprising for a hydrating foundation), applies well and has medium/buildable coverage. It truly does last 15+ hours on my oily/combo skin so this product has won my heart.
Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick
Everybody and their mothers were talking about this when it first came out so I absolutely had to try it. In the first couple of days while wearing this, my skin was very dry after recovering from eczema and this foundation looked horrible on top. It creased immediately around my nose and mouth and looked embarrassingly cakey at the end of the day. THAT BEING SAID… I wore this again when my skin was back to normal and more oily, and it looked great! It blends well, is definitely medium/full coverage and a little goes a long way even if it’s expensive. Verdict: looks great on oily/normal skin, looks horrible on dry skin.
Stila Written in the Stars Glitter & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow Set
The full name of the product: Magnificent Metals Glitter & Glow liquid eyeshadow. These shadows blew me away! I had to make an animated GIF to really capture their beauty in action. I bought a gift set of 3 minis in shades (left to right): kitten karma (beige pink base + gold glitter), smokey storm (copper bronze base + gold glitter), and diamond dust (clear/silver base with iridescent glitter). These are super pigmented, very blinding, and have a nice applicator. Be careful though: these can be blended while wet but don’t touch them after they dry down! If you’re touching the product when dry, the glitter will 100% flake off and fall on your cheeks. Otherwise, these last a long time on my oily eyelids. I do have one complaint: of these 3 shades I own, kitten karma is the only one with a pigmented base colour. The other 2 are lacking in that department, so kitten karma is the only one I’d repurchase.
Peter Thomas Roth Skin to Die For Primer
This is probably one of the first products in a long time where I bought it without looking up reviews first. The claims really called out to me: there are some serious patented ingredients in this that claim to blur out all imperfections and keep the face matte all day. Too bad neither of these things were true for me – my t-zone still got oily as normal, and my pores were still very visible when I applied foundation. However, there are some pros to this product: my makeup applied very smoothly over this, and the primer didn’t pill (like eraser shavings) like most silicone ones usually do. I won’t be repurchasing this, though because I’d rather use something like the Smashbox photo finish, or Benefit Porefessional to blur out my pores.
Make Up For Ever Step 1 Skin Equalizer Primer: Hydrating (mini size)
I picked up this mini tube to try out the primer that Desi Perkins on YouTube swears by. It’s very simple and doesn’t claim to do anything profound – I just wanted a basic primer that would help hydrate underneath my makeup. All of my other primers are for big pores and/or oily skin, so this is a great addition to my collection. My makeup does apply well on top of this, and there was less caking. I’ll have to try it out a bit more though.
Urban Decay Shadow Insurance Eye Primer – Anti-aging (mini)
You can find swatches and my opinion on UD’s shadow insurance here. I absolutely love their eye primer and it will be my ride-or-die for life. I wanted to try the anti-aging formula with the 20% off discount, and I got the mini size because let’s be real – who actually finishes using a full size eye primer? I do notice that the anti-aging formula is more slippery/oily than the original. Not sure how I feel about that.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick – Dusty Rose
Their most popular shade in stock, and 20% off? You bet your ass I picked it up. The formula is amazing and the colour is stunning. Enough said.
Marc Jacobs Reinvented Lip Duo – 2 mini lippies
I actually first bought the full size gloss, but I ended up exchanging it for this duo lip set with the exact same shade! The MJ gloss has a beautiful formula (slightly minty, not tingling) and Allow Me is a very pretty plum/pink with gold reflects in it. The mini lipstick is also very smooth and pigmented, and the shade 246 Slow Burn is a very flattering dark mauve. This kit was $26, so with the 20% off it was a great deal.
YSL Rouge Volupté Shine Oil-In-Stick Lipstick – 47 Beige Blouse
This is my first YSL purchase ever! So exciting!! YSL products smell so delicious, like a light mango dream, and is definitely one of the reasons why I picked up this lipstick. This is almost like a tinted balm – very hydrating and comfortable on the lips. This is one of my favourite lip products at the moment and was definitely worth the 20% off.
Too Faced Melted Latex Liquified High Shine Lipstick – Unicorn Tears
HOW COULD I NOT BUY THIS?? LOOK AT THAT COLOUR! Since this product came out, I’ve wanted it but I couldn’t justify spending $25 on something I’d only use a few times a year. 20% off was apparently the excuse I needed to add this to my collection. The formula is like a concentrated, high-pigment gloss. For festivals and fun nights out, this is a great way to make a statement. I do understand that this is a high-shine formula so it’s not meant to last long, but reapplying this gets annoying because there is residue buildup that only gets worse and worse throughout the night.
Kat Von D Studdied Kiss Lipstick – Vampira
This was already on sale for $15, so another 20% off on top of that means I get a KVD lipstick for the price of a drugstore one! I thought a dark, vampy red shade would be great for fall/winter but honestly I haven’t used it at all (hence why there’s no swatch). I might just return it without trying it. It’s included in the featured image of this post though so I didn’t want to leave it out.
Milk Makeup Holographic Stick – Supernova (mini)
LOOK HOW BEAUTIFUL THIS IS! I was looking for a purple highlighter and this stick from Milk Makeup caught my eye. It twists up, and it applies on the skin evenly. It has a dewy finish as you can see, and definitely makes my cheekbones look like they’re from outer space. Yaasssss. And this highlight WITH the Too Faced Unicorn Tears?? You don’t even know. It’s the best combo ever.
Aaand that’s what I bought during the 20% off sale! I did make multiple trips online and in-store because the discount was reusable within a given time frame. Will I use everything reasonably to justify my spending? Nope. Am I rich? Nope. Do I have any regrets? Definitely not! If there’s anything you picked up during the sale you’d recommend, please leave a comment below 🙂
